Balboa Press Author Bronnie Ware’s First Self-Published Book Lands Hay House Contract

International Media Attention Propels Ware’s “The Top Five Regrets of the Dying” into Best-Sellers’ Lists, and Prompts Publishing Contract Offer from Hay House Publishing

BLOOMINGTON, IND., U.S.A. – 16 Feb. 2012 – Balboa Press, a division of Hay House Inc., and leading self-publisher of personal empowerment books with a positive message, today announced that author Bronnie Ware’s powerful memoir, “The Top Five Regrets of the Dying – A Life Transformed by the Dearly Departing,” has been acquired for publishing by Hay House, Inc.

Ware, an Australian native, spent the last few years working in palliative care, after other professional pursuits left her feeling unfulfilled. Her work required she tend to the needs of terminal patients, often in the last three to twelve weeks of their lives. “I found each patient experienced a variety of emotions, as expected. These included: denial, fear, anger, remorse, more denial and eventually acceptance. Every single patient found their peace before they departed though – every one of them,” said Ware.

Feeling compelled to document her experiences, she wrote an article about the most common regrets expressed to her by the people she had cared for, titled “The Top Five Regrets of the Dying.” The article received considerable attention and at the behest of readers, Ware decided to write a personal memoir of the same title. After self-publishing through Balboa Press, Ware’s book started to gain popularity, fueled mainly by international interest from some of the top media properties in the world, including “The Guardian” and “The Huffington Post.” Balboa’s publishing partner, Hay House, Inc. took notice.

“Calls from the media came pouring in, and Ware’s book sales just exploded. ‘The Top Five Regrets of the Dying’ was becoming an international phenomenon because it was so identifiable and such a powerful, real-life topic,” said Leon Nacson, Managing Director of Hay House, Inc., Australia. “I immediately contacted Bronnie to offer her a publishing contract and she burst into tears of joy. She informed me she had just left the labor ward where she had given birth to a baby girl. She said she had made two prayers earlier that day, the first asking that the birth go well and that her baby would be happy and healthy, and the second that she would earn a publishing contract. It was an incredible moment, and we are all pleased to welcome Bronnie and her lovely daughter to the Hay House family.”

“Our goal is to open doors and to create opportunities for authors that can lead to success,” said Keith Ogorek, senior vice president of Author Solutions, Inc., the publishing partner of Balboa Press. “Bronnie Ware wrote a very powerful, compelling book and we were thrilled to help her accomplish her dream of becoming a published author.”
